How to Convert Tire Sizes

Converting tire sizes between metric and inches is essential for comparing different tire options and ensuring proper fitment. This calculator helps you convert between the two systems quickly and accurately.

Tire Size Conversion Formulas

The following formulas are used in our tire size conversion calculations:

  1. Section Width (inches to mm): Widthmm=Widthinches×25.4
  2. Section Width (mm to inches): Widthinches=Widthmm25.4
  3. Sidewall Height (inches): Sidewallinches=Widthmm×AspectRatio2540
  4. Overall Diameter (inches): Diameterinches=RimDiameter+(2×Sidewallinches)
  5. Aspect Ratio (%): AspectRatio=SidewallinchesWidthinches×100

Calculation Steps

Metric to Inches Conversion:

  1. Convert section width from millimeters to inches
  2. Calculate sidewall height in inches using the aspect ratio
  3. Calculate overall diameter by adding rim diameter and twice the sidewall height

Inches to Metric Conversion:

  1. Convert section width from inches to millimeters
  2. Calculate sidewall height in inches from overall diameter and rim diameter
  3. Calculate aspect ratio using sidewall height and section width

Example Calculation

Let's convert a metric tire size 225/45R17 to inches:

  1. Convert section width to inches: Widthinches=22525.4=8.86 inches
  2. Calculate sidewall height: Sidewallinches=225×452540=3.98 inches
  3. Calculate overall diameter: Diameterinches=17+(2×3.98)=24.96 inches

The equivalent size in inches is approximately 24.96 x 8.86 R17.
