Calculate PPM

How to Calculate PPM (Parts Per Million)

Parts Per Million (PPM) is a common unit used to measure very dilute concentrations of substances. This calculator helps you easily determine PPM concentrations using either mass and volume or mass percentage.

What are the Formulas?

There are two main formulas for calculating PPM:

  1. Using mass and volume:

    \[ \text{PPM} = \frac{\text{Mass of solute (mg)}}{\text{Volume of solution (L)}} \]

  2. Using mass percentage:

    \[ \text{PPM} = \text{Mass percentage} \times 10,000 \]

What are the calculation steps?

  1. Choose the calculation method: mass/volume or mass percentage
  2. If using mass/volume:
    • Enter the mass of the solute
    • Enter the volume of the solution
    • Ensure units are in mg for mass and L for volume
    • Divide the mass by the volume to get PPM
  3. If using mass percentage:
    • Enter the mass percentage of the solute
    • Multiply the percentage by 10,000 to get PPM

Example Calculation

Let's calculate the PPM for a solution containing 50 mg of solute in 2 L of solution:

Step 1: Identify the values

  • Mass of solute = 50 mg
  • Volume of solution = 2 L

Step 2: Apply the formula

PPM = 50 mg / 2 L = 25 PPM

Therefore, the concentration is 25 parts per million.

Diagram of PPM Concentration

The following diagram illustrates a PPM concentration:

PPM Concentration Solute Solvent 1 million parts total 25 parts solute 999,975 parts solvent

This diagram represents a 25 PPM concentration. The green sliver represents 25 parts of solute, while the blue area represents 999,975 parts of solvent, totaling 1 million parts.
