How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage Using U.S. Navy Method

The U.S. Navy Body Fat Calculator is a widely used method for estimating body fat percentage. It uses circumference measurements and height to calculate body fat, making it a convenient and non-invasive approach.

U.S. Navy Body Fat Formula

The formula differs for males and females:

  • For Males:
    Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(abdomen - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
  • For Females:
    Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387

Where all measurements are in inches.

Calculation Steps

  1. Measure height, weight, and circumferences (neck, waist, and hip for females) in inches
  2. Apply the appropriate formula based on gender
  3. Calculate body fat percentage
  4. Use the body fat percentage to determine fat mass and lean body mass

Example Calculation

Let's calculate the body fat percentage for a male who is 70 inches tall, weighs 180 lbs, has a neck circumference of 15 inches, and a waist circumference of 34 inches.

Step 1: Apply the U.S. Navy Formula for males

BodyFat%=86.010×log10(3415)70.041×log10(70)+36.76=86.010×log10(19)70.041×log10(70)+36.76=86.010×1.278870.041×1.8451+36.76=109.98129.23+36.76=17.51%

Step 2: Calculate Fat Mass

FatMass=(BodyFat%÷100)×Weight=(17.51÷100)×180=31.52 lbs

Step 3: Calculate Lean Body Mass

LeanBodyMass=WeightFatMass=18031.52=148.48 lbs

Therefore, this person has an estimated body fat percentage of 17.51%, with 31.52 lbs of fat mass and 148.48 lbs of lean body mass.

Visual Representation

This pie chart visually represents the body composition of the person in our example calculation. It shows the proportion of lean body mass (148.48 lbs) to fat mass (31.52 lbs) in their total body weight of 180 lbs.
