Lumber Weight Calculator

Calculate Lumber Weight and Density

Use this calculator to estimate the weight and density of lumber or hardwood. Enter the dimensions or board feet, and select the wood species.

How to Calculate Lumber Weight

Calculating the weight of lumber is essential for various woodworking and construction projects. This process involves considering the dimensions of the lumber, the wood species, and its density.

Lumber Weight Calculation Formulas

The formulas for calculating lumber weight are:

1. Volume (cubic feet) = \(\frac{Thickness (in) \times Width (in) \times Length (in)}{1728}\)

2. Board Feet = \(\frac{Thickness (in) \times Width (in) \times Length (in)}{144}\)

3. Weight (lbs) = Volume (ft³) × Density (lb/ft³)

4. Weight (kg) = Weight (lbs) × 0.453592

Where:

  • Thickness, Width, and Length are the dimensions of the lumber
  • Density is specific to the wood species

Calculation Steps

  1. Determine the dimensions of the lumber (thickness, width, length)
  2. Calculate the volume in cubic feet
  3. Identify the wood species and its density
  4. Calculate the weight by multiplying volume by density
  5. Convert the weight to kilograms if needed

Example Calculation

Let's calculate the weight of a piece of oak lumber with the following specifications:

  • Thickness: 2 inches
  • Width: 6 inches
  • Length: 8 feet (96 inches)
  • Wood species: American Red Oak (density ≈ 44 lb/ft³)
  1. Calculate volume in cubic feet: \[Volume = \frac{2 \times 6 \times 96}{1728} = 0.6667 ft³\]
  2. Calculate board feet: \[Board Feet = \frac{2 \times 6 \times 96}{144} = 8 bd ft\]
  3. Calculate weight in pounds: \[Weight (lbs) = 0.6667 \times 44 = 29.33 lbs\]
  4. Convert weight to kilograms: \[Weight (kg) = 29.33 \times 0.453592 = 13.30 kg\]

This piece of oak lumber weighs approximately 29.33 lbs or 13.30 kg.
